If companies want to meet the needs of today’s workforce they ought to be offering them a new type of work experience and prioritising employee-interaction and flexitime working.
Fierce competition, globalisation and the digitalisation of communication are radically altering the way we work. But while basic employee needs have changed, the working environment generally has not and the traditional mix of individual offices and open-plan areas is no longer fit for purpose. Close to 30% of the respondents to a survey commissioned by secure access software specialist Citrix Systems reckon that a more flexible workplace and more flexible hours would help foster a better work-life balance. The work structures of tomorrow will certainly be about allowing employees to work wherever and whenever they need to and will therefore have to be able to cope with every kind of situation, but the company will also need to provide an informal venue for collaboration.
Creating a better-suited work environment
The survey findings, which were unveiled to mark the inauguration of new Citrix company premises near Paris,appear to confirm the need for change – not only in spatial organisation and working hours but also in terms of employee-interchanges and the tools made available to them. More and more staff are now asking for places where they can be alone, but many are also calling for areas where they can work together and build team spirit. The study reveals that, if they could change one aspect of their workplace 28% of the respondents would choose to have a place where they can be alone, 35% of those polled would create recreation areas and 22% would like to have spaces where they can meet up with others in an improvised manner.
Does the feel-good factor foster creativity?
So what benefits would such new arrangements bring? Some 17% of the survey respondents say that the changes they want would help them concentrate better, 16% argue that they would be more productive and 10% claim they would be more creative. Whatever the specific claimed benefits, there is general consensus that one’s working surroundings are of prime importance. The study also reveals that 46% of those polled saw teleworking as the future and a similar number predicted that flexitime would also become the norm.
