On August 5 VUDU and the Adult Video Network announced a partnership to bring High-Definition adult-entertainment to a dedicated AVN channel on the VUDU network. This latest step in TV set-top box entertainment further develops the trend in immediate access to full-resolution, full-length movies and television episodes to rent or to buy. It’s TiVo from the Internet, but more

so.

As one of the earlier manufacturers of the internet-streaming TV-set boxes, VUDU (Santa Clara, CA) enjoyed an edge in the market.  Competitors have been establishing themselves – AppleTV retails for $70 less, and both Roku and Xbox Live stream unlimited Netflix movies to subscribers. Faced with redundancy, the $299 VUDU box needed a special tactic to distinguish it from the crowd.

Incorporating adult content could be seen as a customer-lure cure-all, as porn is one of the largest branches of the entertainment industry. In addition, VUDU isn’t the first to delve into this area: previous incarnations of the set-top porn box do exist, such as FyreTV.

While FyreTV was the first set-top box dedicated to adult content back in January, VUDU has the unique opportunity of making both mainstream Hollywood box-office draws and the “Steamy Valley” productions available through the same service. More choice combined with high quality sets VUDU apart from anyone else in this category.
