The post-hospitalisation period can be complex to manage, for both healthcare practitioners and the patient’s family. This new US startup has developed an app designed to help provide post-acute care solutions.

Careport Helps Patients’ Family and Medical Practitioners Organise Aftercare

Facilitating patient monitoring and follow-up is an area which the e-health sector seems to be increasingly focusing on. Better, for example, offers to arrange medical appointments and provide personalised monitoring 24/7, while Mango Health brings a gaming element into taking prescribed medication. Now the founders of new US startup Careport Health have found that managing a patient’s post-acute care poses problems both for the family of the discharged patient and for healthcare practitioners. Their app is designed to coordinate the post-hospitalisation treatment process – arranging medical appointments and obtaining information on the patient’s side and monitoring how patients are progressing on the physician’s side – and help manage communication between the various parties involved with maximum efficiency.

Connecting doctors and patients

Careport Health offers several different types of services. While the main concern for patients and their families is getting hold of information and arranging medical appointments, the benefits of Careport Health services are even clearer on the practitioner’s  side. The service replies to requests for information from patients and their families without having to make an appointment to see the doctor and links up the different treatment centres that are caring for the patient. For example, a nurse could enter information on a patient, look for a post-hospitalisation care centre that matches the patient’s profile and book a place there. Careport developed this solution after noting the results of several surveys, which revealed that patients felt a need for better communication. In France, where the idea of online relations between patients and doctors has been slow to take off, 61% of those polled nevertheless agree that the Internet can enable them to take charge more efficiently of their own health or of that of a family member.

Accelerated development

There seems to be a substantial number of startup accelerators dedicated to the e-health sector in operation these days, a major stimulus perhaps being the signing into law in 2009 of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), which provides tax and other financial incentives to drive forward the adoption of modern IT systems by US healthcare organisations. These days it is also quite common for a startup go through several incubators, as has been the case with Careport Health. The company participated most recently at the SXSW Interactive Accelerator in Austin, Texas, having earlier followed the TechStars and MassChallenge programmes in Boston.
